“The moment in between what you once were, and who you are now becoming, is where the dance of life really takes place.” - Barbara de Angelis

Join us for an upcoming Art of Motherhood workshop! Facilitator Lisa Kagan offers Art of Motherhood workshops, classes and retreats for mothers of young children at the Family Heirloom Arts Studio and through community organizations, preschools, wellness centers and arts education facilities throughout the Portland Metro area. Contact us if you would like to bring an Art of Motherhood workshop to your community of moms. Art of Motherhood programs are designed to help you refill your well, so you can flourish and thrive as you continue to nurture and support your family.

We invite you to:

  • Take a break from your responsibilities and enjoy the opportunity for self-reflection and creativity.
  • Allow yourself to be nurtured and taken care; someone else will make the snacks.
  • Engage in uninterrupted adult conversation and make new mom friends.
  • Turn the raw material of your daily life into fuel for the creative process, helping you to feel more inspired as you navigate your day-to-day life.

Art of Motherhood Programs…

We just finished a wonderful series of spring Art of Motherhood workshops throughout the Portland area. Though we don’t offer public workshops in the summer, we are always happy to set-up a custom workshop for your small group or community of moms during the summer months. We offer two-hour one time workshops, multiple session classes and half-day retreats. Please contact us to get started setting up your own custom workshop.

About our workshops…

Art image of a mother and child standing at the top of a hill gazing at the moon and stars.Discover a creative and reflective space amidst your busy life to connect with yourself and other moms in a supportive and inspiring environment. Learn techniques for utilizing creative writing, drawing, painting, and collage to explore the journey into motherhood and the adventure of the early years of parenthood. You will have the opportunity to share insights and experiences with other moms through the process of turning the raw material of your daily life into fuel for the creative process. Completed art and writing pieces serve as a way to document and honor this incredible period of transformation and adaptation. No previous creative writing or art experience necessary. These programs are designed as a “mom’s time out” for mothers of young children. It is requested that participants attend the class without their young children.

Participating in the Art of Motherhood class was the biggest gift I have given myself since becoming a mother three years ago. Taking the time to go somewhere without my son to connect with other moms and reflect on the supremely individual and simultaneously universal joys and challenges of early motherhood through a creative process felt hugely luxurious and affirming in the deepest sense. The Art of Motherhood program is for moms across the spectrum—new moms, moms to many, the artistically inclined and the creatively timid. It provides a chance to tap into the wealth of experience that the journey of motherhood provides but is often undocumented and lost due to the sheer immensity of it. Lisa has developed a deep and enriching opportunity for moms to engage in a creative process to connect with each other, as we connect more deeply with our children and ourselves.

One of the most valuable aspects of my experience in the class was the ability to open up to understanding the differences and similarities between mothers. I really appreciated the art and writing component combined and the depth of the subject matter expressed by everyone.

I loved the opportunity to be introspective through the written reflections and answering specific, thought-provoking questions. Personally creating art was a huge challenge but very valuable. I really enjoyed gathering with a supportive group of women and hearing their stories.
