“Today, people can be so disconcerted that they feel they are blades of grass, but when they who know their grandparents and great-grandparents were, they become trees, they
have roots, they can no longer
be mowed down.”
– Maya Angelou, poet

The Art of Storytelling

Oral History Interviews:
Lisa Kagan conducts oral history interviews for individuals and families. Carefully crafting a set of questions to be used as a guide during the process, Lisa utilizes active listening techniques to help the narrator share their stories with comfort and ease. A high quality digital voice recorder is used to record the interviews. The interviews can be conducted over the phone as needed. Edited versions of the audio files can be made available upon request.

Transcription:
We transcribe oral history interviews from digital audio recordings. The completed transcriptions can serve as the basis for a written narrative for an heirloom book or as a stand-alone document for life story preservation.

Writing:
The art of storytelling is brought to life through the creation of a finely crafted written narrative, preserving the voice and perspective of the storyteller through the pages. Utilizing the transcriptions from the oral history interviews as a guide, the narrative is crafted to engage the senses, evoke emotions and transport the reader in time and place. Voices from multiple narrators can be woven together to share different perspectives within the context of the story. Social, historical and cultural context can be included to support and enhance the story.

Text Editing:
Every great story needs a great editor. We help you revise, edit, and organize the life stories that you have written to create a cohesive narrative. Clarity of ideas, punctuation, and grammar are refined as needed to create a finished narrative that will stand the test of time.

“Inspiring to think about the possibilities that exist within my family for beginning to share our stories.”
– Paula, OASIS Workshop Participant
