Why a Custom Ceremony?
People often do not know where to seek help to honor these pivotal moments. As a result, the myriad of life transitions we experience can go by unacknowledged.
This may be especially true if you are not connected with a specific religious community and identify as secular, spiritual, interfaith, and/or have a mixed cultural heritage.
You may no longer feel connected to the religious and/or spiritual practices you grew up with and are trying to find your own relationship to recognizing life passages.
Or you may want to honor some of the traditions you grew up with, within a new context.
You may have no previous experience with ritual and ceremony in your life and would like to find a way to deepen and develop your relationship with your threshold experiences.
Lisa, founder of Full Circle Ceremonies, is a celebrant who holds space as a ceremonial guide and also as a creative collaborator for those who are looking to lead their own ceremonies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are you wondering what the terms celebrant, ceremony, ritual, and rites of passage mean in the context of creating custom personal ceremonies? Of course these terms mean different things to different people, but here are some brief explanations that may be of help.
Celebrants are master co-creators and performers of ceremonies that reflect the needs and beliefs of the people they are honoring. A celebrant is not bound by any religion or specific doctrine, allowing celebrants to create and facilitate completely personalized ceremonies for their clients.
A ceremony is an intentional event, experience, or celebration done in support of a clear intention. Ceremonies create a container with an opening, central experience, and a closing (beginning, middle, and an end) designed to mark specific life stages and rites of passage, often in the company of family, friends and/or community.
A ritual is any act performed mindfully, calling attention to or changing our state of being. Rituals are typically a sequence of actions performed in a specific order, often with symbolic meaning, which can become habitual. Rituals can serve as part of a daily personal practice and can be incorporated into ceremonies marking important life events.
A rite of passage is a process that marks the transition from one life phase to another. They can be turning points when we go through important changes related to our identity, behaviors, choices, and roles. Examples include; a child’s transition to adulthood, starting a family, the closing of a specific life stage, navigating a crisis, and stepping into a new way of being.
