Generosity

To me the word “generosity” speaks of the concept of abundance. When I feel generous, I recognize that is also a sign that I am taking care of myself. At this time of year when there is such a huge focus on the idea of gifts and giving, I have been reflecting on what I feel that the people in my life truly need. These may or may not be things that I can wrap up in a box, but things I can give if I slow down and show up from a place of fullness. I often ask my Family Heirloom Arts clients this question when we are doing oral history interviews, “What are some of the gifts that the people closest to you have brought into your life?” Their rich array of responses speaks to the thread of connection that is foundational to our relationships with each other; kindness, deep listening, understanding, compassion, support, shared time together, unconditional love, and acceptance.

The Gift of Stories

This year a number of the Family Heirloom Arts client projects we have been working on came about in the form of gifts, gifts from adult children to their parents, as a way of honoring and celebrating their parents, as a way of giving back. Some have gifted an hour or two of oral history interviews, and others have engaged in the full process of creating an illustrated heirloom book. If you are interested in gifting your parents, your grandparents, or a close friend or relative the chance to tell their stories in the coming year, please contact us and we would be happy to set this up for you.
