"From every human being there rises a light." - Baal Shem Tov

Just Announced…Registration is Now Open for Our Upcoming Winter Workshop!

On Returning, Mixed Media by Lisa Kagan

As we move from the darkest time of the year towards the return of the light, this afternoon retreat will offer you the chance to step away from the demands of daily life to connect more deeply with your own inner light through engaging in the creative process of writing, painting, drawing, and collage. You will have the chance to explore what resilience and renewal mean to you in the context of your personal journey. We will experiment with creating our art on circular canvases, drawing inspiration from the cycles of the seasons, the practice of mandala creation, the rich tradition of Japanese crests, and the power of myth and personal symbolism. This afternoon will provide you with the opportunity to nourish yourself in the supportive, uplifting company of other women. Light snacks, tea, and all art supplies will be provided.

No previous art or writing experience necessary. This workshop is for people who identify as female of all ages and backgrounds. This program is offered as a collaboration between Portland Women Writers and Family Heirloom Arts.

Our Community Art was on CBS News Sunday Morning!

During the last week of October I received this message in my inbox:

Collaborative art image created by kindergartners in Mr. Pinkston’s class with artist Lisa Kagan at Lewis Elementary School, Portland Oregon, Winter 2019

Hi, Lisa –
I am SO excited to tell you that your WONDERFUL sun – the collaborative piece done by your son and your kindergartners – is going to be on our CBS Sunday Morning broadcast tomorrow morning. Steve Hartman is doing a story on a very special friendship, and that sun is just perfect as an ender. I hope that you get to see it! Thanks so much for sharing this fantastic artwork with us.
Have a great Sunday.

All the best,
Jessica FrankAssociate Director/Sun CoordinatorCBS Sunday Morning

Many months ago I submitted an image of this collaborative art piece that I helped to create with my son and his kindergarten classmates for their school auction. On a whim after reading this article about the “Sunday Morning Sun Queen,” I decided to submit the image of our art for consideration. I was surprised and very excited to learn that our sun was going to be aired on CBS News Sunday Morning on October 27th, 2019. We are incredibly honored to be able to share the children’s art work with a national television audience and to be one of the 9,000 suns that Jessica Frank “keeper of the suns” has handpicked for the program over the last 20 years.
