“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.” - Martha Graham
About the Artists:
All of the artwork featured here was created by mother artists during the Art of Motherhood monthly workshop series.
Take a few minutes to reflect on the following question. Feel free to write down your thoughts in the form of poetry, prose or a list of your reflections.
In what ways have your child(ren) taught you to see your life and the world differently?
Art Making, Creating Narrative Imagery:
Now I invite you to experiment with creating a narrative image inspired by your own reflections in response to the question above.
Circle key words and/or phrases from the writing you just did in response to the question above. These words and phrases can be used as the basis for your art piece or incorporated into the art itself.
Get out your art materials and set-up your workspace. Whatever you have available will work well, suggested materials include: drawing materials, paint, collage materials, and colored paper. In addition, I encourage you to print out some photos of you and/or your child(ren) and copies or originals of your child(ren)’s art that can be incorporated into your piece.
Start creating! Through your art making explore the ways that having children has changed your perspective on yourself, your life and the world around you. Enjoy and allow the process to take you where it will. If you feel so inspired, please share your work with us, we would love to see what you have created!
